No-Cost Safety and Survival Training
for PNW Commercial Fishermen
MITAGS was awarded a grant from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed to fortify the commercial fishing fleet in the U.S. Pacific Northwest with best-in-class marine firefighting and first aid training. The Coast Guard-approved courses are offered at the MITAGS West campus in Seattle, Washington free of charge, on a first come, first served basis to qualifying members of commercial fishing crews with proof of employment.
- Basic Training
The course is designed for seafarers to provide immediate life-saving first aid until the arrival of first–aiders of greater training. Designed to teach attendees how to administer short and long-term assessment and care of the sick or injured. The seafarers will learn the anatomy and physiology of the human body, diagnostic procedures, basic and advanced first aid techniques, CPR, automated external defibrillator (AED), and other pertinent shipboard medical processes. Examines firefighting techniques and control of firefighting operations with emphasis on organization, tactics, and command functions for maritime professional training. The course includes live firefighting activities to detect and extinguish fires. Learn More - Firefighting Team Trainer
Crews build on foundational training within live fire conditions in a realistic, yet safe, learning environment. Aboard the M/V Fire Dragon, the MITAGS 120′ purpose-built marine fire training mock-up, your crew will work together to fight multiple engine room, galley, and living space fires; conduct search and rescue operations; practice command, control, and communication skills; and gain confidence in their gear, their leadership, and themselves. -

Students in these program(s) will be required to participate in rigorous physical activity which will include, but is not limited to the following activities: - Jumping into pool from height of approximately one meter.
- Swimming a distance of approximately 20 feet while wearing a PFD or immersion suit.
- Staying afloat for approximately 1 minute without the use of a PFD or similar aid.
- Deploying and entering a life raft and righting a capsized life raft while wearing a PFD or immersion suit.
- Conducting search & rescue of simulated personnel casualties weighing approximately 150 pounds from an enclosed space-smoke/fire environment while wearing breathing apparatus and protective clothing.
- Extinguishing fires with and without the aid of breathing apparatus. This will include moving quickly and climbing up and down ladders while holding fire fighting equipment such as heavy hoses.
- Bending, stooping, lifting, and turning real or simulated patients.
- Performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on a mannequin
