Controller / Chief Financial Officer
MMP Maritime Advancement, Training, Education, and Safety (MATES) Program has complex program offerings and diverse funding sources including hotel / conference activities, academic tuition, trust, research, curriculum licensing, and foundation grants. The U.S. Department of Labor, EEOC, GSA, MHEC, Washington State Workforce Development, NYC, State of Maryland, IRS, third-party auditors, and the Board of Trustees have significant financial reporting requirements.
The CFO will lead the day-to-day finance operations with an annual budget of approximately $21 million and supervise a team of five staff members. The CFO will fill the role of Controller. This includes functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The CFO will ensure that MMP MATES Program has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct audits. The CFO will work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures, but, also to explore how the finance function can better support program operations.
This is an extraordinary opportunity for a mature leader with seven to ten years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders. Experience in a complex nonprofit and hotel operations that have multiple programs and services is a plus.
Specific requirements include:
- Proven experience as Controller and CFO or similar role.
- BSc/BA in Accounting, Finance or relevant field. MSc/MBA and CPA is a plus. Minimum of a BA, CPA and/or MBA preferred.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
- Ability to travel to our West Coast Campus on a semi-annual basis. Working knowledge of Accounting and Hotel Software Systems (Great Plains, PN3, Visual 1, CRM, and BI360 Solver) is desired. Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) expertise is required.

Full-time Instructor/Simulator Operator
MITAGS West Coast Campus seeks a full-time Instructor/Simulator Operator to provide classroom instruction and simulator operator support.
Classroom instruction will focus on Mate-to-Master upgrade courses, as well as Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch (OICNW) courses.
The job also entails operating the simulator for USCG-approved courses, research projects or assessments.
Travel may be required to teach at the east coast campus, or other off-site locations.
Desired qualifications include: USCG Master Unlimited, having sailed at least one year on that license–may be substituted with equivalent uniformed service experience (NOAA, USCG, USN); degree in adult education.
Requirements include: USCG-approved Train the Trainer course; ability to work flexible hours, to include early morning, evening and/or weekends; excellent writing and communications skills; excellent computer skills, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and related information systems; very strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
