Course Description
The two-day (16-hour) advanced firefighting refresher and revalidation course, also called an AFF Refresher course, is intended to provide refresher training for personnel who will command firefighting efforts on board the vessel. The course is designed to fulfill the training requirements of the 2010 Amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code, as outlined in CG-CVC Policy Letter No. 12-07.
What You Will Learn
A successful trainee will demonstrate knowledge and skill in command and control procedures related to the management of shipboard firefighting through the following:
- Pre-fire planning
- Organization
- Tactics
- Crew training
Due to the above goals, our AFF refresher course focuses on exercises that expand your skill set and confidence in these areas.
What You Should Bring
Attendees at the MITAGS campus should bring work clothes as the STCW advanced firefighting refresher class will attempt to visit a ship in the port of Baltimore for practical exercises.

Advanced Firefighting Refresher Class Requirements
The requirements for our advanced firefighting refresher class include the successful completion of an advanced firefighting course that the United States Coast Guard (USCG) approves. Our class will provide you with the necessary experience and knowledge to submit an application for renewal with the USCG.
To renew your STCW advanced firefighting license with the USCG, you will need to provide proof of the following:
- U.S. citizenship
- Medical certificate
- Merchant Marine Licensing and Documentation (MMLD)
If you are not a U.S. citizen, you may supplement the requirement with a valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).

Prerequisites
If you’re a mariner with a certification in Advanced Firefighting, you are qualified to take this course. It’s important for you and all members of the crew to be as safe as possible aboard your vessel. This is why, even if you’ve been certified before, it’s important to build your confidence and make sure you understand the necessary procedures.
Other prerequisites include STCW qualifications and USCG entry-level or higher documents. If you had an Advanced Firefighting certification in the past and need to have it renewed, you can take this course.
