Mariner Competence and the Navigation Skills Assessment Program presented at the Waterway Transport (Safety) Group in Anaheim, California.

Gregg Trunnell, NSAP® Global Business Development Manager presented the NSAP® to the Group, whose attendees included Shell, Conoco, Exxon, Teekay, Seabulk Tankers, Maersk, Matson, Sause Bros., Crowley, Military Sealift Command (MSC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Maritime Administration (MARAD), and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). The presentation centered on how the global maritime community is utilizing the objective assessment tool to assist in identifying risk areas concerning safety of navigation directly related to mariner competence. The audience keenly digested specific lessons learned from approximately 1,800 individual mariner assessments. These include (but are not limited to):

  • Tools, BRM, Communications, COLREGS and Ship handling risk factor commonalities;
  • Watch keeping risk identification and possible remedial actions;
  • Where and when complacency is occurring; and
  • Average score by education or education type for planning purposes.
