SEATTLE, Wash. — The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) recently welcomed a new cohort of apprentices participating in the Workboat Mate Apprenticeship Program at its West Coast campus in Seattle.

The program, which began its latest session in April 2026, provides aspiring maritime professionals with a structured pathway toward earning their credentials while gaining the knowledge, practical experience, and leadership skills needed to succeed in the workboat industry.

Designed to prepare participants for careers aboard towing vessels and other commercial workboats, the program combines classroom instruction, simulation-based learning, and extensive onboard training. Apprentices work toward obtaining the experience and qualifications necessary to advance within the maritime industry while developing the confidence required to serve as future leaders.

“We continue to be proud of the opportunities this program provides within the maritime industry,” said Jenny Pitzen, Director of Student Services and Apprenticeships at MITAGS. “The structure of the program builds confidence both in and out of the classroom, developing officers who are ready to succeed in this role as well as lead and mentor those who will come after them. The network of support that is being built within the industry is a pleasure to witness.”

For many apprentices, the program represents more than career advancement, it provides a clear path into an industry known for offering meaningful work, professional growth, and long-term opportunities.

“This apprenticeship gives me the opportunity to learn from experienced mariners while gaining the skills and sea time needed to build a career in the maritime industry,” said one member of the 2026 Workboat Mate cohort. “Being part of a program that emphasizes teamwork, leadership, and hands-on experience has strengthened my confidence in pursuing this profession.”

The Workboat Mate Apprenticeship Program reflects MITAGS’ ongoing commitment to workforce development and supporting the next generation of maritime professionals. Through partnerships with industry employers and experienced instructors, apprentices receive the guidance and resources needed to navigate the demands of the profession successfully.
