LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md. — The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) recently welcomed a new cohort of apprentices participating in the Grand River Navigation (GRN) Apprenticeship Program at its East Coast campus in Baltimore.

The program, developed in partnership with Grand River Navigation, provides aspiring mariners with a structured pathway toward advancing their careers in the maritime industry through a combination of classroom instruction, simulator training, and onboard vessel experience.

The newest cohort began training in April 2026, taking part in courses designed to build the knowledge and practical skills necessary for success aboard commercial vessels. Early training activities included RFPNW (Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch) instruction utilizing MITAGS’ advanced simulation technology.

“As demanding as this work can be, I’m deeply proud of what we’re building with the Grand River Navigation apprenticeship at MITAGS,” said Catherine Gianelloni, Director of MITAGS East. “Every hour spent in the classroom, on the simulator, and aboard GRN vessels is an investment in the next generation of officers our industry urgently needs.”

MITAGS strives to provide apprentices with support beyond the minimum program requirements. Apprentices have access to tutoring opportunities, additional educational resources, advanced simulation experiences, and the convenience of onsite lodging and dining accommodations at the Baltimore campus.

One apprentice from the 2026 Grand River Navigation cohort praised the program’s approach to instruction, noting that the training provided “clear, concise instruction that blends together at the end,” helping students connect classroom concepts with practical application.

The Grand River Navigation Apprenticeship Program offers participants a clear pathway toward career advancement while helping address the growing need for qualified maritime professionals throughout the Great Lakes region and beyond.

Photographs from the current cohort’s RFPNW simulator training showcase apprentices gaining hands-on experience in realistic bridge scenarios designed to prepare them for the responsibilities of vessel operations.
