Z-Drive / Tractor Tug Training

Azimuthing Stern Drive (ASD), or Z-Drive tractor tugs have revolutionized the towing industry by offering unmatched control and safety.  But they don’t behave like conventional tugs. Operators must understand how these vessels handle under different loads, currents, and environmental conditions. Without proper training, even experienced tug masters can find themselves challenged in high-stakes situations.

Working with Captain Jeff Slesinger, one the world’s leading ASD instructors, MITAGS is proud to offer an introductory program to help mariners gain confidence and competence, learning to handle these vessels effectively and safely.

Inside the MITAGS Z-Drive Tractor Tug Class

Our Z-Drive Tractor Tug Training is built around hands-on experience and real-world scenarios. Using MITAGS’ state-of-the-art full-mission simulators—designed to replicate tractor tug performance with incredible accuracy—participants practice essential maneuvers.  The class size is limited to 4 students, and it uses 2 simulators to give maximum “Hands-On” experience. Every exercise is designed to build muscle memory, decision-making skills, and situational awareness.

In 2 full days we cover:

  • Principles of Z-Drive Design
  • Z-Drive Mechanical Systems
  • Principles of Z-Drive Maneuvering
  • Fundamentals of Light Vessel Handling
  • Communications
  • Troubleshooting
  • Advanced Maneuvers – Relevant to operation

The program concludes with a Z-Drive Competency Evaluation
