Overview

MITAGS is seeking passionate, motivated individuals with a strong interest to build long-term careers working on bulkers on the Great Lakes. No experience prior is necessary as MAP combines alternating academic and at-sea phases, ensuring greater retention of material while offering a truly hands-on learning experience.

The program is competitive, but for the right candidates, it provides a unique and rewarding pathway. Through partnerships with leading maritime companies, MAP coordinates the required onboard training during sea phases. These companies are not only looking for candidates who can meet the physical demands, long hours, and challenging conditions aboard vessels — they are also investing in individuals they expect to stay and grow with them long after the apprenticeship ends.

Earning a deck officer credential is just one milestone in the program. The ultimate goal — shared by MITAGS and its partner companies — is successful job placement and long-term employment. The apprenticeship is a proven launchpad for a stable and fulfilling maritime career.

Steps After Applying

MITAGS Initial Interview

After submitting a complete application, applicants will be contacted by the Program Manager to schedule an initial interview. This conversation is an important step in determining whether the MITAGS Maritime Apprenticeship Program is the right fit for the applicant’s career goals and expectations.

During this interview, the Program Manager will discuss the structure of the apprenticeship, program expectations, and the realities of working in the maritime industry. This also provides applicants the opportunity to ask questions and better understand the commitment required.

If it is determined that the apprenticeship program may not be the best fit, the Program Manager will work with the individual to help identify alternative pathways or programs that may better align with their goals.

For applicants who are determined to be a strong fit for the program, their application will move forward to Grand River Navigation for review. At this stage, the Program Manager will also discuss progress on obtaining any required credentials and documentation if that process has not already begun.

Company Review & Selection

Applications selected to move forward will be shared with Grand River Navigation in January 2027.

Final hiring decisions are generally communicated in early February, allowing accepted apprentices approximately two months to prepare for the program start date.
