Original Licenses & Upgrades

Original Licenses and Upgrades MITAGS is one of the few schools in the United States that offers a complete line of courses and programs that are designed to help a mariner to go from Ordinary Seaman to Unlimited Tonnage Master. These programs include all of the deck training requirements that are outlined by the Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping Code (STCW-95). The sidebar menu of this website groups MITAGS courses that are part of a program that leads to a specific license or endorsement. Renewal, stand-alone, military, and other specialized courses are listed separately and can be accessed using the menu bar at the top of the page. Students attending any of MITAGS’ U.S. Coast Guard certified programs may be eligible for tuition assistance through SLM Financial (also known as Sallie Mae).  For additional information, please visit the SLM Financial link. Students enrolling in MITAGS' License Advancement, Chief Mate/Master, AB to Mate, or Workboat Mate Program are encouraged to purchase the following items:   -   Texas Instruments 30XA non-programmable calculator.   -   Navigation dividers.   -   Triangles.   -   Laptop computer (if you already have one).   -   Captain Joe's License Preparation CD-ROM: This program typically retails for $50.00 and includes tutorials in the areas of trigonometry, interpolation, stability, navigation, and much more.  To order a copy of the CD-ROM, please visit Captain Joe's website, which is listed below under "Useful Links."   -   Lapware: Lapware is an Internet-based license preparation program.  Students attending MITAGS' License Advancement Program (LAP) will have free access to the program during their stay at the Institute.  For individuals that require offsite access, they may purchase the program through the Lapware website, which is listed below under "Useful Links."      -   Deck Officer Study Guide (The Murphy Books), Volumes 1 through 6: Students attending MITAGS' License Advancement Program (LAP) are highly encouraged to purchase the above-referenced publication.  Note that the guides are available for sale and shipping through the Institute's Ship Store at (410) 859-5700, extension 2160.   For additional information on preparation tutorials, please review the "LAP Preparation Tutorials" information, which is listed below under "Downloads."
