The Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) welcomes you to the Workboat Mate Program. For your convenience, we have put together a detailed website to help introduce you to the Workboat Industry. This site, which is called the Workboat Academy, is located at the bottom of this page under "Useful Links." Throughout the site, you will find the answers to most questions, general information on the Workboat Industry as a whole, its companies, job descriptions, career planning information, and other useful links.

Important Information
When you decide to join this program, you will be embarking on a journey that is unprecedented in the maritime industry. Please make sure you read all of the information associated with the program carefully, as this type of career is very different from the "punch the clock" jobs that you may be used to.  In fact, successful completion of this program offers most individuals a very comfortable lifestyle. However, it also requires an extensive commitment. MITAGS highly recommends that prospective students speak with individuals that are already working in the Maritime Industry so they may receive a fair assessment of what this lifestyle entails prior to enrollment in the program.

Facility Locations
The Workboat Mate Program is conveniently offered on the East Coast and the West Coast at the following:

v Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS) in Linthicum Heights, Maryland.

v Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) in Seattle, Washington.

Admission Requirements
Prospective students must complete all of the following items prior to enrollment in the Workboat Mate Program:

v Obtain a U.S. Passport.

v Obtain a Merchant Mariner Document (MMD).

v Interview with the Program Manager at MITAGS or the Director of PMI.

v Provide proof of education (High School Diploma, GED, or an approved equivalent).

The Institute will only reserve space in this program for candidates that have fulfilled all of the admission requirements listed above.

Merchant Mariner Document (MMD)
Please note that the Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) is mandatory for all program attendees. It is vital that individuals start this process at least three (3) months prior to the start of the program.

A physical examination (with a drug screening and background check) will be required to obtain the MMD, as individuals must meet all of the physical requirements for Merchant Marine Officers. Also note that normal color perception is needed to meet these requirements. Furthermore, note that a criminal record may affect your ability to receive the MMD.

You will not be confirmed for a spot in the program until you have the Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) "in hand."  For additional information on the Merchant Mariner Document (MMD), please visit the U.S. Coast Guard website, which is listed below under "Useful Links." You may also contact the nearest U.S. Coast Guard Regional Examination Center (REC). For your convenience, a list of REC's area can also be found on the U.S. Coast Guard website.
